A BRIEF HISTORY OF UMS

Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta (UMS) is a higher education institution under the Persyarikatan Muhammadiyah. UMS was established based on the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture of the Republic of Indonesia No. 0330/O/1981 dated October 24, 1981 as a change of form from IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta.

Before becoming UMS, institutionally UMS came from the Faculty of Teacher Training and Education (FKIP) Surakarta Muhammadiyah University which was founded in 1957. Its pioneers included Mrs. Sudalmiyah Suhud Rais, Mr. Radjab Bulan Hadipurnomo, Mr. Muhammad Syafa’at Habib, Mrs. Sulastri Gito Atmodjo, and KH Syahlan Rosyidi.

On September 18, 1958, the institution was inaugurated by the Mayor of Surakarta, H.M. Salih Werdhisastro. At the time of its inauguration, this university only had 51 students, 6 employees, and 7 lecturers. These assets are the initial capital for the establishment of FKIP Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta Surakarta Branch which is located at Jalan Overste Sudiarto Number 60 Surakarta.

As the Dean (Rector at the time) was Prof. Drs. Abdullah Sigit, Professor of Gadjah Mada University and his secretary Drs. M. Syafa’at Habib. The majors opened are General Education, General Economics and Islamic Studies-Islamic Education-Bachelor level with Registered Status.

In 1963 these departments received Equalized Status (received the same award as a state university diploma equivalent to the Baccalaureate level) based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science Number 106/A of 1963.

In 1965 FKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta Branch got permission to stand alone and become two higher education institutions, namely the Teacher Training and Education Institute (IKIP) Muhammadiyah Surakarta, under the coordination of the Department of Higher Education and Science and the Muhammadiyah Islamic Institute (IAIM) under the coordination of the Ministry of Religion. IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta was established with majors in General Education (PU), General Economics (EU) based on the Decree of the Minister of Higher Education and Science Number 337/B-SWT/1965, and IAIM with the Department of Tarbiyah/Islamic Education and the Department of Ushuluddin/ Comparative Religion based on the Decree of the Minister of Religion Number 21 of 1966.

In 1967 IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta added one major, namely Civic Law (CH) with registered status and obtained permission as the parent of Muhammadiyah Universities throughout Central Java which consisted of IKIP Muhammadiyah Klaten, Magelang, Kudus, Purwokerto, Kebumen, Wates, Temanggung, Wonogiri. , Sukoharjo, Karanganyar, Banjarnegara, Prambanan, Purbalingga, Wonosari, and Sragen. After developing, these branches eventually became independent universities, such as IKIP Muhammadiyah Purwokerto – now Muhammadiyah University Purwokerto, IKIP Muhammadiyah Purworejo – now Muhammadiyah University Purworejo, and IKIP Muhammadiyah Magelang – now Muhammadiyah University Magelang.

In 1979, Drs. H. Mohamad Djazman, Chancellor of IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta at that time, initiated the establishment of the University of Muhammadiyah Surakarta by combining IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta and IAIM Surakarta. This initiative was later realized with the issuance of the Decree of the Minister of Education and Culture Number 0330/O/1981 regarding the change in the status of IKIP Muhammadiyah Surakarta to Universitas Muhammadiyah Surakarta.

As institutional strengthening, UMS manages several faculties, namely FKIP, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Engineering, and Faculty of Islamic Religion (FAI). Following this, new faculties were established, namely the Faculty of Psychology, the Faculty of Geography, the Faculty of Health Sciences, the Faculty of Pharmacy, the Faculty of Medicine, the Faculty of Communication and Informatics, and the Faculty of Dentistry.

As an independent faculty, FH UMS began to accept new students and held lectures since the academic year 1981/1982, using the lecture building at SMP Muhammadiyah ! Kerten. Then after the campus which is located in Pabelan is now completed, lecture activities move to Building A, Pabelan Kartasura Campus. Furthermore, since the 1998/1999 academic year, the FH UMS campus moved to Building I until now.

As a legal higher education institution, the organization of academic activities at the Faculty of Law UMS was initially placed by KOPERTIS Region VI Central Java under the supervision of the Faculty of Law UNS. In the early period, when FH UMS had a limited number of lecturers and the rank qualifications were inadequate, teaching and learning activities relied a lot on lecturers from FH UNS, Fisip UNS, FH UNDIP, FH UII and F Psychology UGM. In later developments, when FH UMS already had a better number and qualification of lecturers and obtained Equalized Accreditation Status, slowly the use of technology
